i didn’t really care much about the helena guergis affair. i mean i didn’t like her attitude towards her fellow canadians at a p.e.i. airport but she wasn’t really on my radar. however, as weeks passed and new allegations came up…i started to wonder…isn’t she just a check-in luggage the government should get rid of? or at least claim lost? (and knowing air canada…lost luggage wouldn’t be surprising) having her in cabinet would probably be kryptonite…so just get rid of her. but i was very surprised that they removed her from caucus on friday. i mean this is caucus and not just the cabinet. she now sits as an independent…well, at least she would be if she ever decides to show up to question period.
she must have royally screwed up…i mean the rcmp were called in. it was particularly surprising for me because the day before this all happened, that infamous dimitri soudas defended guergis and her place in cabinet. soudas said she did an exceptional job as the minister for the status of women but it made me think…what did she do there? ever since throwing a bitch fit at an airport, she has since just sat at committee meetings…giving one word answers…now is that really a good minister? even during question period she was reluctant to answer questions.
this incident, however, speaks to a bigger problem that plagues this government that promotes accountability and transparency in government. this was their 2006 election platform which helped them form a minority government after the famous liberal sponsorship scandal broke. they will not say anything about the nature of scandal concerning guergis because it has now passed on to the rcmp…but they really could have given us the nature of her disposal from the caucus. telling the public that the issue has been given to the rcmp and not saying anything else is irresponsible considering the person in question as a minister of the state. she was responsible for 52% of the canadian population. so, in this case it seems like they are hiding behind the rcmp and this may take months to finally dispel the truth. wouldn’t it be easier and painless for the government to just expose it and get over with it quickly?
the afghan detainee issue is another example where the government has not been transparent enough. there is no public enquiry because the government believes it may hinder on national security and crap like that. so they prolong this issue by not allowing the committee to see undoctored documents. some say that the blacked out parts have nothing to do with national security but to cover up an embarrassment. now the government has given iacobucci the job to determine whether the documents the opposition are asking for pose a threat to national security. however, iacobucci will only answer to the pmo and not the house of commons. that means even if iacobucci says the documents are fine and pose no threat to national security…no one would know except for the government and they could always spin another story on that. so does this make this government accountable to canadians? are they making government transparent to those who seek it? do they think we are that stupid? well, apparently they do.
so, in conclusion, i once could have cared less about guergis…then i was angered by her actions and now i just pity her and hope her the best. i guess now she knows how prince islanders feel…this is how living in a ‘hell-hole’ feels like…she should move there! but if you really think about it…with harper ruling canada with an iron fist…we are kinda living in a hell-hole as well…what a shame…ALL HAIL HARPER AND HIS HAIR!
